Being a believer of the fact that “Internet has the solution of everything”, I had always used it to seek help in how to do’s, study, news and analysis, e-zines, even for new seasonal sms greetings and never got disappointed.
These are among few benefits but the term everything comes loaded with all the wanted and unwanted things, from which one can select the wanted and can easily discard the unwanted ones. However on internet you get a limited choice to avoid the unwanted stuff, I am not talking about spam, viruses, hoaxes, but a sad aspect of unwanted bombarded porn and vulgar content from internet disguised in advertisements. Internet advertisements are not up to the standards as of the real bill boarded version. We, average users seek help from internet, via search engines mostly, from where we are redirected to websites with most appropriate keywords, there, with the we experience various advertisements in various forms, shapes, sizes and colors for the sake of some bucks to the owner of the content. Often advertisements are good enough to be viewed but at times we are referred to totally wasted websites with explicit text and content as there are only keywords related to our search query but no content, merely some copied text or pictures.
If content is good enough for user compliance but at along the sides of the page, or at top, or in a big square nearly at the centre of the, we experience a bikini girl showcasing the hotel resort or a beach holiday offer, it send only one message to visitors mind, “We are here to click and this website is for earning bucks only“. New users and the people of lower age group will be attracted more towards such ads, a link which is of no use to them. Lower age group include pre-teen, and teenagers which access internet simply for some basic research of assignments or for online games but along with it their ethics are on risk as bikini girl won’t do any good to them but may earn some cents to website owner, that’s bad really bad to even think and for me to write it here. We should strongly condemn such websites and promote the use of the anti-porn softwares at large, parents should acquire good tactics to avoid such instances, if they are not able to install such a software then they may easily get installed it from market instead of putting their young ones upon the mercy of cruel and non ethical internet world.
If we see and observe Pakistani websites are not far behind in such attack as one of the text link “Pakistan Romance” at ATP (All Things Pakistan) which has nothing to deal with the content of website direct its users to a list of similar links directing to explicit content. I don’t blame the owner simply consider the minds of users going after that add link for no use. Another example I observed at Pak Spectator, this time it’s again google text link “Pakistan girl” referring to same results which are itself not good enough to be displayed.
Google Adsense hold the fair market share in providing such pay per click ads for website publishers, and it is in Google’s own policy not to display adult oriented ads in AdSense in order to protect the publisher’s readers, audience and reputation. Not only advertisements should be filtered by the owner, he should also ask his advertiser to remove them as soon as possible if automated script is used. Other similar advertising websites offer the option to put-off adult and mature ads now it’s the responsibility of the owner of the websites not to select such ads for a good reader and content relationship instead of being selfish and greedy.
In 2006, google listed Pakistan as the most sex-starved country in world; many debates were carried along the Pakistani blogs against and the factors behind it, some felt that listing as a result of only search, some thought it as a conspiracy by the google’s engineered results against the muslim countries, some blamed the lack of sex understanding in people and some quoted the religion factor, but all along it was somehow true that internet is also serving as a porn station which is very bad indeed both as socially and ethically. Amazingly its now Egypt (another muslim country to top the list) but Pakistan(now) is not even in top ten, nor any of our city is listed there.
Many of us may think, websites with porn content are already having the 18+ legitimacy but this can be by-passed easily with a click or just selecting 18+ age or year of the birth, and you are legible to access all mature content. Better try it by selecting adult content ON inside Youtube profile, your all videos will somehow become adult instead of getting the value added videos.
Serving as the major informative resource internet should be filtered by good and positive measures to block the porn on internet are still lacking, possible policies from ISP’s would be appreciated. Every new website should be launced by some policy, to which it would be the responsibility of that website to not only provide good content but also to maintain the quality.
